Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL)
Minimally Invasive Solution for Complex Kidney Stones
Dr. Horovitz offers Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL), a specialized procedure designed to remove large or complex kidney stones that cannot be treated with other methods like shockwave therapy or medication. PCNL is a minimally invasive surgery that allows direct access to the kidney through a small incision, enabling the removal of stones that are too large or difficult to pass naturally. With extensive experience in performing PCNL, Dr. Horovitz provides expert care to ensure optimal outcomes and patient comfort.
What Is Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL)?
PCNL is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for removing large kidney stones directly from the kidney. Unlike noninvasive methods like Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL), PCNL involves creating a small incision in the back to access the kidney, allowing Dr. Horovitz to remove the stones using a combination of specialized tools. This procedure is typically recommended for rocks more significant than 2 centimeters, irregularly shaped, or not responding to other treatments.
When Is PCNL Recommended?
Dr. Horovitz may recommend PCNL if:
You have significant or complex kidney stones that cannot be treated with non-invasive methods.
The stones cause severe symptoms such as pain, infection, or obstruction.
Previous treatments like ESWL have not successfully fragmented or removed the stones.
How Is PCNL Performed?
During the procedure:
Anesthesia: PCNL is performed under general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort.
Access to Kidney: A small incision is made in the back, and a nephroscope (a thin, specialized instrument) is inserted through the incision to access the kidney.
Stone Removal: Dr. Horovitz breaks up and removes the kidney stones using advanced tools. A laser or ultrasonic probe may sometimes be used to fragment the stones.
Recovery: A temporary drainage tube may be left after the procedure to ensure proper healing.
Recovery After PCNL
Recovery from PCNL typically requires a short hospital stay, usually 1-2 days, and most patients can resume normal activities within a week. Dr. Horovitz will provide personalized post-operative care instructions, including hydration strategies and medications to promote healing and prevent future stone formation. Regular follow-up appointments will ensure a smooth recovery.
